The Future Robbins Park was initially purchased by Mecklenburg County in 2001 to provide for the open space needs of citizens in the Lake Norman area.  In an effort to expedite development of the park, the Town of Cornelius leased the property from the County in 2002 and began a master planning process shortly thereafter.  After numerous public workshops and input from various interested parties a master plan was completed that addresses the recreational needs of citizens for years to come.

The 116 acre park plus 20 acre Westmoreland Athletic Complex is located in west Cornelius near the intersection of West Catawba Avenue and Westmoreland Road at the old Robbins farmstead.  Today, the Town and Simonini Builders are collaborating to develop the infrastructure that will form the necessary road and utility improvements to serve the park as well as the “Preserve at Robbins Park” residential development that will adjoin the park.  Grading for the roads is nearly complete and other infrastructure improvements are well underway.

The Town is also concurrently working on developing construction drawings for the development of the “Crescent Area” of the park.  The Crescent fronts West Catawba Avenue and will serve as a signature entry to the park.  The Crescent will have informal play fields, playground, tennis courts, restroom, and picnic shelters and is in the Park, Arts, Recreation, and Culture Department’s capital improvement plan for development in 2010.  The rest of Robbins Park will consist of a blend of passive and active recreation amenities including nature trails, observation points, community garden, athletic fields, picnic shelters, restrooms, water based playground, and 18-hole disc golf course.
