Flag Football 2009

The Cornelius / Davidson / Huntersville Parks and Recreation Departments are offering this youth flag football program for boys and girls ages 4-14. The purpose of this league is to provide a non-contact football program that will teach and reinforce the basics for individual skills development, team play, and football strategies.

The following information will help guide you through the season.  Also available for download is a complete copy of the 2009 Flag Football Rules.

LOCATIONS FOR GAMES & PRACTICES

Games and practices are scheduled to take place at Smithville Park, located at 19710 S. Ferry Street or at other area locations in the Cornelius / Davidson / Huntersville area.

PARENTS' ORGANIZATIONAL INFORMATION

All parents are required to visit the PAYS (Parents Association for Youth Sports) website and sign the parent’s code of ethics by Friday, August 28. This website will discuss important information pertaining to youth athletics. The link to access on-line program is http://paysonline.nays.org.  
From the on-line program home page, select NC – Davidson Parks & Rec from the chapter drop-down list and enter 1114 in the code field, click next and follow the prompts to completion. There is no charge for this service.

COACHES CERTIFICATION

All coaches are required to complete a coach’s application and to attend one (1) of the two (2) coaches certification meetings:

Saturday, August 22, 8:30 am Davidson Park & Rec office – 416 Armour St.

Saturday, August 29, 8:30 am Davidson Park & Rec office – 416 Armour St.

At the coaches meetings, we will discuss detailed information pertaining to the upcoming season, including league rules, drafting procedures, practice schedule, and more. We will also conduct a coach’s certification program through the National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA).

AGE DIVISIONS

Division Instructional: Ages 4 & 5, coed (Age as of September 1st, 2009)
Strictly instructional and FUN, meeting once weekly on Saturday mornings for 45 minutes.

Division A: Ages 6-8, coed (Age as of September 1st, 2009)
Developmental league. Practices and games will take place, but no score will be kept.

Division B: Ages 9-11, coed (Age as of September 1st, 2009)
Practices and games will be scheduled, along with post-season play.

Division C: Ages 12-14, coed (Age as of September 1st, 2009)
Practices and games will be scheduled, along with post-season play.

SKILLS ASSESSMENT DAY

All participants are required to attend the skills assessment day. The skills day will provide training / practice opportunities for each participant while also allowing Parks & Recreation staff and volunteer coaches the opportunity to evaluate each participant. The participant evaluations are important as they enable the Parks & Recreation staff to gather information that will ensure that players are assigned to teams as evenly as possible.  Note there are no skills days for Instructional Division participants.

At the conclusion of all player selections, and if there are slots available, participants that did not attend a skills day may be assigned to a team.

*Coaches will be asked to stay immediately after skills to assist with player assessment.

LEAGUE DRAFT

The league draft will be conducted by age division and will help ensure that players are assigned to teams as fairly as possible. League drafts will take place by Friday September 4th. All draft rules and procedures will be discussed at the coaches meeting.

TEAM ASSIGNMENTS

By Monday, September 7th, all coaches will receive a final copy of their team roster along with participant phone numbers. Coaches should notify all of their players by Monday, September 7th with practice and team information.

PRACTICE SCHEDULES

Team practices will begin the week of September 7th. Teams will practice one time per week during the season and practices will last approximately 45 minutes.

LEAGUE GAMES

League games are scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 12th.  Instructional division participants will meet beginning Saturday, September 19th.

Each team is tentatively scheduled to participate in one (1) pre-season game on September 12th and six (6) regular season games starting on September 19th followed by a post-season bowl game or tournament play.

The number of games is subject to change based upon total registration (team numbers) and weather conditions.

League games may also be scheduled to weeknights in the event of schedule changes or postponements.
